Boxsmall, the family friendly festival market, has returned to the the rooftop of Waverley Mall for 2016. I was recently asked along to experience this year’s offering, which includes a new nine hole golf course, so I popped along with Mr Bug for a round and a bite to eat.
The thing that struck me most about the golf course was the absolutely stunning view. With beautiful panoramic views of Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town, this must be one of the most scenic putting courses in the world!
The course consists of nine holes and costs £10 for a family, or £5 per adult and £3 per child. It took me and Mr Bug around half an hour to get around the course – and I absolutely slayed him, naturally!
All that golfing made us a little hungry so we wandered over to the market to get a bite to eat. There are 14 stallholders at this year’s market, covering everything from street food to gifts, from local producers and those from further afield.
We got our lunch from a Latin street food stall called Orinoco, which is by luck is one of the first places you’ll see if you approach the market from the entrance of Waverley Station. The smells waving from their stall were incredibly tempting, so I was very pleased to hear these guys do vegan options!
I had an ‘arepa’, which is a kind of flatbread made from ground maize dough, stuffed with black beans, spinach and fried plantain. Mr Bug on the other hand had the completely non-vegan option of pulled chicken and cheese! The perfect way to fill up after a round of tough putting.
Thanks to its accessible layout, great views and handy location, Boxsmall is the perfect place to spend a spare hour or two. Pop along if you’re in Edinburgh city centre this August.
Boxsmall family market is open daily 11am – 7pm, 1st – 28th August 2016. You’ll find it on the roof of Waverley Mall, right beside the entrance to Waverley Train Station. To find out more information, take a look at the Boxsmall website.
Many thanks to the team at Boxsmall for inviting me along to experience the golf and market!
