Rock House Edinburgh

Rock House

Even though I live in Edinburgh myself, I really enjoy having a nose around the various accommodation options in the city. From 5 star hotels to charming homely holiday lets, I love seeing what the city has to offer. So as you can imagine, I didn’t have to be asked twice when I was invited along to the Instameet at the newly refurbished Rock House!

It took me a wee while to find the entrance to the house – it is actually hidden in plain sight on the path leading up to Calton Hill. Eventually I spotted the unassuming wire gate and made my way up the stairs to the charming gardens in this gorgeous property.

Rock House was built in 1765 and is arguably one of the most famous addresses in Scottish photography. Thanks to its sunny location which escaped most of the pollution and smoke from ‘Auld Reekie’, it was snapped up by Robert Adamson and David Octavius Hill, who used it as their studio from 1843 to 1847.

It was here they forged some incredible pioneering work in the field of photography. With Adamson’s technical skill and Hill’s artistic flare, many pieces of influential visual art were produced at Rock House. Not surprising, as I walked around the house and took in the breathtaking views of the city, I could see how a place like this could be incredibly inspiring.

Most recently, Rock House was bought in 2015 by Jonathan Reed and Graeme Black. Jonathan is an internationally renowned interior designer and used his skills to sensitively furnish this historic house with his design company Studio Reed.

As I explored the nooks and crannies of this charming house, I could tell that exceptional care had been taken to create an aesthetic that compliments its rich history. It is a gorgeous house and I would absolutely jump at the chance to call this place home!
