Wannaburger cheeseburger

A firm favourite of locals (especially the students), Wannaburger is an independent burger joint in the Edinburgh’s West End, serving up simple food that is good value for money. It’s the perfect place to go if you a craving a quick burger (or hotdog!) hit.

Inside Wannaburger

Wannaburger has a menu full of American classics, with a wide range of beefburgers, chicken burgers, hotdogs and milkshakes. They use locally sourced ingredients which includes 100% Aberdeen Angus scotch beef and buns made by a local baker which are free from any nasty additives. The food might be “quick”, but it certainly isn’t “dirty”!

Wannaburger Buzzer

Inside, Wannaburger looks very much like your traditional fast food joint. There is a bar where you order your food, and after paying you’re handed a buzzer that will tell you when your food is ready.

In the meantime, you can get your drink from the fountain and grab yourself a table. Then it’s just a case of waiting patiently for the buzz… which thankfully never takes too long!

I kept it simple and ordered the cheeseburger meal with fries. The patty was quite small, but the crispy salad, tasty burger sauce and simple bun made a good ensemble.

The fries were lovely and well seasoned. I had loaded up on a little pot of ketchup, but I found that after a couple of dunks, the fries worked perfectly well by themselves.

Little Piggy at Wannaburger

My dining partner went all out, trying the March special “The Swiss Piggy”. Yes, it is just as indulgent as it sounds! Consisting of a beef patty, swiss cheese, streaky bacon, pulled pork and smokey barbecue coleslaw, this was one burger to be reckoned with.

The ingredients were all great, however a little more could have been done to help the burger stick together, such as melting the cheese a bit more. Having said that, it was still a mighty fine eat.

Hotdog, fries and onion rings

We also treated ourselves to a plain hotdog, which actually became the star of the show. I wasn’t a huge fan of the onions (but I don’t usually like onions anyway), however the sausage itself tasted great and had an authentic german flavour. A great alternative if you don’t fancy a burger.

Overall Wannaburger is a great option if you fancy a spot of fast food, either as a quick lunch during a shopping trip on nearby Princes Street, or a cheap dinner after a day of sightseeing. Either way, Wannaburger offers a value for money alternative to the very well known burger chain around the corner – and I know where I’d rather go. 😉

You can find Wannaburger (website) on 7/8 Queensferry Street, EH2 4PA. You can get there by pretty much any bus that goes through the city centre – just get off at the West End of Princes Street and turn right when you see Ryan’s Bar.
